Je ne suis pas difficile…

Selon la légende, Winston Churchill aurait prononcé cette phrase alors qu’il visitait le Plaza Hotel à New York en 1929 ou en 1931. Il semble bien pourtant que ce dernier ne l’ait jamais formulée. C’est en 1941 qu’on en trouve la trace pour la première fois. Frederick Edwin Smith, comte de Birkenhead, aurait dit de son grand ami :

Winston’s tastes are very simple. All he wants is the best.

 

Les goûts de Winston sont très simples. Tout ce qu’il veut, c’est le meilleur.

On trouve la citation quelques années plus tard avec des mots différents, toujours de F. E. Smith, mais cette fois transmise par Waldorf, le fils de Winston Churchill :

Mr. Churchill is a man of very simple tastes. He is always prepared to put up with the best of everything.

 

M. Churchill est un homme aux goûts très simples. Il est toujours prêt à accepter le meilleur de tout.

Plus récemment, pour John Rupert Colville, secrétaire du Premier ministre britannique, F. E. Smith aurait juste dit :

Mr. Churchill is easily satisfied with the best.

 

M. Churchill se satisfait facilement du meilleur.

Quant au fait que Churchill ait exprimé lui-même ce bon mot, quel que soit sa forme, nous en avons surtout des attestations datant des années 2000 !
